What was your interpretation of Denzel's character in The Book of Eli?

When I first saw the movie, it was in bits a pieces and I thought he was blind because of him wearing the sungles all the time and I caught the scene where the book was written in Braille. Then when I watched it again, what I took from it was that Eli was like a futuristic, violent version of Moses because of him hearing the voice that tells him to deliver a book, that turns out to be the Bible, to a specific location and making waste of anyone in his way in the process.
